page’s wedding { 6.19.13 }

19 Jun

As my Dad so eloquently expressed in his toast on Friday night the youngest Garrett girl – aka “the baby” – got hitched this weekend. The whole weekend was filled with celebration, family, friends, food and most of all…FUN! Everyone involved in the planing of all the events did a great job, especially my Mom who I’m pretty sure never wants to see a google doc again in her life.

WARNING: This post has a lot of pics!

Kicked off the weekend with a luncheon Friday afternoon.DSC_7380 DSC_7374

I got a new jumpsuit (love a good jumpsuit)…okay, that’s all.DSC_7427

No pictures allowed during the actual ceremony (grrrr) but the walk down the aisle the next day looked just like this except Page was in a white dress and Dad was in a tuxedo.DSC_7437

Watch out people, mother of the bride and maid of honor coming through with the dress and shoes!

Next up we hightailed it out of the church to kick up our shoes at the Rehearsal Dinner. I was too busy chatting and having fun to take any good pics but I got a few blurry crowd shots during the toasts, which were all fantastic (special thanks to Joel and Andy)!DSC_7468 DSC_7474 DSC_7484

Started off Saturday morning with a brunch where the bride and groom came in shifts so they wouldn’t see each other. DSC_7497 DSC_7501 DSC_7508

No pictures during the ceremony = womp womp. Ceremony was followed by a kick-ass reception where I was pretty much grooving on the dance floor the whole time (or pigging out at the mashed potato bar). I particularly love the shots of the bride and her beer!IMG_3429 IMG_3423 IMG_3432 IMG_3436 IMG_3440 IMG_3447 IMG_3461IMG_3463 IMG_3464 IMG_3469The happy couple the next morning coming in as The Bradshaws!

big apple barbecue { 6.11.13 }

11 Jun

IMG_3347The Big Apple Barbecue Block Party is one of my favorite events that I look forward to the first half of the year. It combines 2 of my favorite things: being outside in the sun + eating. What more do I really need to say?! It’s a 2-day outdoor festival in Madison Square Park that showcases the country’s finest pitmasters who serve up their top-rated, delicious, sloppy, juicy barbecue. Vendors line the outside of the park with beer tents stationed inside while rotating bands serenade the ‘cue-lovers. Joel and I have gone together the past 3 years and we successfully overstuff ourselves each time! I’m partial to pulled pork shoulder and Joel fancies the ribs….so obviously we get tons of both!

Mmmm, mmm!

il_fullxfull.431181810_git01} NY Magazine’s Summer 2013 issue out. So much to do, so little time. I want to live every page of it! It’s got info on what to eat, where to beach, what to see, what to hear and what to wear while doing it all!

2} What a charming little bracelet that’s easy on the wallet too.

3} The next book I’ll read.

4} Citibike has launched here, a NYC bike share program where you can rent bikes from hundreds of self-service stations around the city. Plus three great bike rides.

5} It’s Big Apple Barbecue time again in Madison Square Park. The waits are long, hot and absolutely worth it!

Happy Weekend, I’m going to brave the BBQ lines after my run in Central Park on Saturday!

Women Supporting Women : Sadie Nash Leadership Project { 6.5.13 }

5 Jun

The other week I held the second Women Supporting Women gathering of the year. I was really excited to get everyone together again after having such a blast the first time around. This time did not disappoint either! A small group of us dished on family dynamics, celebrity encounters, job woes, office etiquette (we all agreed it was inappropriate to walk around without shoes at a new job) and embarrassing college stories. With thanks to Andrea who steered the conversation to why we were there in first place, we chatted about our organization du jour, the Sadie Nash Leadership Project and the positive impact it’s having on the young women’s lives the program is reaching. Turns out Tanya had participated in leadership camps herself as a young girl and I can attest to the leader she is today (she runs her own arts program for elementary students and leads them into excellence).

Sadie Nash Leadership Project is a leadership training academy for young women in NYC ages 14-21 with priority given to those attending public high schools. Participants are engaged in various programs (year long after school program; 6-week summer program; 9-month leadership training, and more) – all programs focus on building leadership skills to empower young women to be agents for social change. Several programs place young women at organizations of their interest where they serve as volunteers and leaders, enabling “Nashers” to give back to their communities. All programs are free to the participants with some even offering paid work for the young women working at an organization of their interest. SNLP just celebrated their 10th Anniversary last year and this year they hope to serve almost 500 low-income girls – our donation will go towards direct program costs with a portion going to the women themselves in the form of stipends, internships pay and fellowships!

Thanks Massoumeh for a great suggestion and  to everyone who came over and sent donations, including those who mailed in checks that weren’t available that evening. The next and last soiree for the year will be in September, you don’t want to miss it!

* Women Supporting Women is a newly-formed group of New York City women dedicated to enriching, improving and empowering the lives of other women. Our intention is to get together socially three times a year, select an organization we feel is making an impact on girls’ and women’s lives, and make personal donations to that organization. *

hello hotty…weather, that is { 6.3.13 }

Summer kicked into high gear up here this weekend with thick air and extremely high temps. This girl welcomed it after what’s felt like 2 months of rain and chills – I’d rather by sweaty and need flip-flops over a needing a Patagonia. The last two weekends I was on the road for Page’s bachelorette party and then to Montauk so it was great to stay grounded this weekend. Mostly I ran errands, did laundry and cleaned up but I did manage to get in a little sun time and was treated to a delicious pasta dinner with great friends.

Stumbled upon a Havianas pop-up store and got geared up for beach season!IMG_3321

Took out new flip-flops, new beach blanket and Gatsby to catch some rays.IMG_3324

I wasn’t the only one with the idea!IMG_3337 IMG_3322

Ended the weekend with a yummy quinoa, red pepper, and cucumber salad with avocado and lime.

family traditions { 5.14.13 }

14 May

275_22951330086_1467_nFamily traditions…when you’re a kid “in” the tradition, really experiencing it in all its guts & glory, you probably hated it but looking back years later you actually start to consider passing them down.

Let me share one.

I’ll start by saying this is my memory of it, which doesn’t necessarily mean it’s totally accurate. I’ll be curious to hear what my parents and sisters remember and how all our memories align or if they even do. There was a period when our Sunday morning wake up call was a record playing Starlight Express while my Dad was yelling along (or was that singing?) and belting out the words “choooooooo chooooooo, engine of love”. Now for those who don’t know what I’m talking about, Starlight Express is an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical about some sort of toy train that comes to life and is performed by actors, each portraying a different car of the locomotive, on roller skates…yeah I know, amazing! So, that’s what we’d hear to get us out of bed and energized while we begrudgingly got dressed for church. So there it went for weeks, months or maybe even years…the needle would drop on the dusty record (that’s right, a record player) and the glorious sound of song would fill the house and on cue the Sunday morning annoying family tradition would begin….and maybe, just maybe, if I was feeling particularly pleasant I’d crack a smile and sing along.

I seem to remember it happening again just a few years ago on some weekend when we were all home, Easter perhaps, and there may have been boyfriends home too? This time though, with time on my side, when the music started it wasn’t an annoying family tradition it was the AWESOME family tradition!

4} Who’s excited to see Baz Luhrmann’s  The Great Gatsby this weekend?! I haven’t read the book (whoops, skipped that required reading in high school) so am reading it now before seeing the movie. Can’t wait though!

5} Lovely Mother’s Day brunch menu and the perfect table to serve it on.

Happy Mother’s Day to all and especially to mine!

brooklyn botanic garden { 5.7.13 }

7 May

We took our first ever trip to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden on Saturday afternoon. I can’t believe I’ve been missing out on such beauty smack dab in the middle of Brooklyn all these years. It was a spectacular! Not that the gorgeous cherry blossoms weren’t enough for me but there were girls out front selling Girl Scout Cookies as a bonus to the trip, so I walked away with 2 boxes of Samoas (with only 1 box left as a type this). Just a tip, admission is FREE on Saturdays from 10am – 12pm which we didn’t find out until about 1:30pm…next time!

2} This rain room exhibit looks coolio and obviously I’ll need to steal a smooch under the rain whilst wearing kitten heels with one leg bending up.

3} You’ve probably heard of NikeiD, where you can customized Nike shoes, clothing and accessories. I did a pair of  sneakers couple years ago that have “EG” on the tongue – obsessed! Their new tool, Nike PHOTOiD designs shoes based on your Instagram photos. Click here and here to see my two photography inspired creations.

4} I have so many ideas on the first dish to christen my new oven with…whenever we have a new oven. Right now this summer berry & yogurt tart { pictured above } tops the list!
