family traditions { 5.14.13 }

14 May

275_22951330086_1467_nFamily traditions…when you’re a kid “in” the tradition, really experiencing it in all its guts & glory, you probably hated it but looking back years later you actually start to consider passing them down.

Let me share one.

I’ll start by saying this is my memory of it, which doesn’t necessarily mean it’s totally accurate. I’ll be curious to hear what my parents and sisters remember and how all our memories align or if they even do. There was a period when our Sunday morning wake up call was a record playing Starlight Express while my Dad was yelling along (or was that singing?) and belting out the words “choooooooo chooooooo, engine of love”. Now for those who don’t know what I’m talking about, Starlight Express is an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical about some sort of toy train that comes to life and is performed by actors, each portraying a different car of the locomotive, on roller skates…yeah I know, amazing! So, that’s what we’d hear to get us out of bed and energized while we begrudgingly got dressed for church. So there it went for weeks, months or maybe even years…the needle would drop on the dusty record (that’s right, a record player) and the glorious sound of song would fill the house and on cue the Sunday morning annoying family tradition would begin….and maybe, just maybe, if I was feeling particularly pleasant I’d crack a smile and sing along.

I seem to remember it happening again just a few years ago on some weekend when we were all home, Easter perhaps, and there may have been boyfriends home too? This time though, with time on my side, when the music started it wasn’t an annoying family tradition it was the AWESOME family tradition!

4} Who’s excited to see Baz Luhrmann’s  The Great Gatsby this weekend?! I haven’t read the book (whoops, skipped that required reading in high school) so am reading it now before seeing the movie. Can’t wait though!

5} Lovely Mother’s Day brunch menu and the perfect table to serve it on.

Happy Mother’s Day to all and especially to mine!

brooklyn botanic garden { 5.7.13 }

7 May

We took our first ever trip to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden on Saturday afternoon. I can’t believe I’ve been missing out on such beauty smack dab in the middle of Brooklyn all these years. It was a spectacular! Not that the gorgeous cherry blossoms weren’t enough for me but there were girls out front selling Girl Scout Cookies as a bonus to the trip, so I walked away with 2 boxes of Samoas (with only 1 box left as a type this). Just a tip, admission is FREE on Saturdays from 10am – 12pm which we didn’t find out until about 1:30pm…next time!

2} This rain room exhibit looks coolio and obviously I’ll need to steal a smooch under the rain whilst wearing kitten heels with one leg bending up.

3} You’ve probably heard of NikeiD, where you can customized Nike shoes, clothing and accessories. I did a pair of  sneakers couple years ago that have “EG” on the tongue – obsessed! Their new tool, Nike PHOTOiD designs shoes based on your Instagram photos. Click here and here to see my two photography inspired creations.

4} I have so many ideas on the first dish to christen my new oven with…whenever we have a new oven. Right now this summer berry & yogurt tart { pictured above } tops the list!

eastern market { 5.2.13 }

2 May

Before heading back home on Sunday we had time for the Eastern Market, an outdoor + indoor fresh food and produce market with a  flea market right next door. It’s basically like combining the Chelsea Market with the Brooklyn Flea.DSC_6988 DSC_6998 DSC_7003 DSC_7008 DSC_7012 DSC_7020 DSC_7023 DSC_7026 DSC_7028 DSC_7033 DSC_7037

Already planning our 2014 trip!

washington dc, monuments + memorials {5.1.13}

1 May

We woke up Saturday to perfect sightseeing weather with blue sunny skies and set out on our DC monuments and memorials walking tour. First up was of course The White House. Secret Service were aggressively shooing onlookers away by the back  fence, apparently there were people in the yard. From far far away I was pretty sure I could hear Michelle calling my name to help plant in her garden.DSC_6576DSC_6569 DSC_6645 DSC_6649

u.s. capitol {4.30.13}

30 Apr

This past weekend was our post birthday trip / we-finished-The-West-Wing trip to see our nation’s capitol that we fell in love with while watching the series. I hadn’t been since elementary school and Joel had basically never been, unless you count a couple hours at a club to see his friend’s band play. The genesis of the trip centered around the TV show so obviously when planning our itinerary a White House tour was top of the list. Unfortunately as a result of the sequester budget cuts White House tours were halted until further notice so we set our sights on a Capitol Tour. Thanks to my co-worker (thanks a million Audra!!!) whose cousin is John Boehner’s Press Secretary we got a private tour through his office.

So the trip started Friday afternoon…Chauncy, a freshman at George Washington University and an intern in the Speaker of the House’s office was our guide. We began in Boehner’s office in the Longworth Building, just one of the Speaker’s three offices. An elaborate underground tunnel system connects the 4 House office buildings, the 3 Senate office buildings, the Library of Congress and the actual Capitol building (maybe even the Supreme Court too, I don’t remember). It’s a whole city underground basically, they have their own zip code, post office, dry cleaners…never have to come up for air!  Most staffers and Congressional members never do, though Marco Rubio does decide to join the pedestrians and seek sunshine to actually walk across the street from his office in the Senate building to the Senate chamber in the Capitol building. Along the walls of the tunnel corridors hangs artwork from children of each Representative’s district. I can’t recall how long they’re displayed but after they’re taken down they go on to sell for thousands of dollars….not bad for a struggling 9-year old artist! The black-white sketch of the girl is from Boehner’s district.DSC_6487DSC_6429

Okay, so now we’re actually entering, from underground, the U.S. Capitol Building!DSC_6431 DSC_6433

The visitor center lobby has a replica of the Statue of Freedom while the real statue, bronzed in all her glory, sits on top of the Capitol dome at 19 1/2 tall. No buildings in DC are allowed to be taller than the Capitol (with the exception of the Washington Monument) and no statues are permitted to be taller than the Statue of Freedom, which is why Lincoln is seated in the Lincoln Memorial.DSC_6436

The crypt, located directly under the Capitol rotunda. Chauncy told us people stand on the star just below the center dome for good luck, so obviously we did!DSC_6437 DSC_6438

Each state donates 2 statues of prominent Americans honoring their history that are displayed throughout the Capitol rooms. Donated by my home state of Virginia is General Robert E. Lee in the crypt. Many actually lobbied for his removal citing his Confederate symbolism but Virginia fought back and would only agree to the removal on the grounds that their other statue of the great George Washington be removed also….tricky Virginians:) DSC_6440

The original supreme court was actually located in the Capitol building.DSC_6442 DSC_6448

These walls of the rotunda feature 8 murals; 4 of the colonization of America and 4 of the American Revolution. Here are Joel and Chauncy admiring one of them.DSC_6455

And then all the sudden we stumbled upon the Speaker of the House’s main office. No pictures were allowed but we were able to go inside and see his personal office and meeting rooms. Amazing to think of all the people who have set foot in those rooms. He shares a balcony with the President pro tempore of the Senate that looks out over The National Mall and where the inauguration takes place. Pics were allowed out there!DSC_6464 DSC_6466 DSC_6473

We spent so much time taking pictures and asking questions that we missed the main event – seeing the House Chamber. So that’s on the list for the next trip!DSC_6494 DSC_6499 DSC_6518 DSC_6525

We walked back to our hotel from the Capitol and passed by gorgeous buildings, museums, a million flags and you know, just the FBI!DSC_6527 DSC_6541 DSC_6549 DSC_6555

We headed to Dupont Circle for a yummy Mexican dinner at Lauriol Plaza and look who was there…photo

On our walk home we found ourselves on the door steps of The White House, the EEOB and Blair House. The lighting on these buildings at night is spectacular that the iPhone just doesn’t do justice!Image 3 Image 1 Image

1} It was a sad start to the week with the hideous Boston Marathon bombings. Out of tragedy comes inspiration that we can try to focus on instead, like the marathon runners who kept on running to Mass General to donate blood. The-Wonderist takes a minute to reflect on her real life superheroes.

2} You pretty much can’t go wrong with mashed up avocados, this Mango-Pomegranate Guacamole recipe sounds exceptionally divine!

3} Brooklyn Flea & Smorgasburg have opened up their outdoor locations, great way to spend Spring weekends.

4} Bill Murray does a rad real life slo-mo walk. This guy is awesome-pants!

5} Pol Watchers – Everyone’s a Bad Guy

Happy Weekend!
